Really Simple SSL Multisite set-up and tips

In this article, we will explain how to activate the plugin on Multisite WordPress environments.

Really Simple SSL (Free) is fully compatible with Multisite WordPress. Note that using the Pro plugin on Multisite WordPress requires the dedicated Really Simple SSL Pro multisite plugin, included with all Agency plans.

Setting up Really Simple SSL in a multisite environment

Really Simple SSL can be installed by uploading and activating the .zip file in your WordPress installation, or in the case of the Free plugin, by installing it directly from the WordPress repository (Plugins -> Add New).

You can only activate Really Simple SSL network-wide on multisite environments, so there is no SSL settings menu on subsites: only on the network admin. Any settings you change here will apply to all sites in the network.

Activating SSL networkwide:

After activating the plugin network-wide, you will see a modal window where you can activate SSL network-wide. Note that doing so will enable SSL for ALL sites in your multisite installation, even if a domain in the network does not have an SSL certificate.

Network settings menu

The network-wide options menu provides almost the same functionality as the Pro plugin.

If you have issues with logging in there, it might be one of the following:

  • Domain mappings may be deleted and need to be reconfigured after the base SSL domain is configured.
  • Incorrectly configured certificates

It is also worth noting that it can help to change the login URL from https://yoursite.com/wp-login.php (network) to https://yoursite.com/wp-admin (direct site login).

Domain mapping tips

  • HTTP (A) to HTTPS (B) redirects will always work as long as domain B has a valid certificate.
  • HTTPS (A) to HTTPS (B) redirects require both A and B to have valid certificates.
